U.S.-Cook Islands Cooperation on Seabed Mineral Resources
CIC Limited (CIC) congratulates the Cook Islands and United States governments on their transformative Joint Statement on U.S.-Cook Islands Cooperation on Seabed Mineral Resources - a milestone agreement to advance responsible seabed minerals development within the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
It is only fitting that this agreement was signed during the 60th Te Maeva Nui Constitution celebrations, a time when Cook Islanders honour their rich cultural heritage while charting an even brighter future.
The Cook Islands government is once again demonstrating its ironclad commitment to a science-first, precautionary approach, demonstrating steadfast commitment to responsible seabed minerals development. U.S. government support for the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority (SBMA) and National Environment Service (NES) will further empower Cook Islanders with the knowledge and tools to evaluate and mitigate environmental impacts from potential seabed mineral harvesting in their EEZ.
By leveraging its world-leading deep ocean research capabilities, the U.S. government is reaffirming it’s commitment to supporting science-led research and other resources necessary to assist in the development of responsible seabed mineral projects around the world.
CIC stands ready to collaborate with the Cook Islands and United States’ governments to expeditiously implement the ambitious research and exploration programs that we have been engaged in since 2022.
We look forward to continuing our mission to support technical capacity building and the environmental research necessary to enhance Cook Islanders’ understanding of their seabed mineral resources.
