Advanced Marine Technology

CIC utilises cutting-edge technology, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), multibeam sonar mapping systems as well as many different sampling and analytical systems to explore the abyssal zone bottom, water column and surface waters.  These technologies help characterise and understand the mineral deposits and life forms associated with them while simultaneously mapping and recording sensitive habitats and ecosystems. 

Environmental Impact

CIC is conducting comprehensive environmental baseline and impact studies to understand the potential effects nodule harvesting would have on deep-sea and midwater ecosystems.  This research includes studying flora and fauna species diversity, sediment displacement and the potential impacts of harvesting technology on marine life and its surroundings.
